The value of a union job

Over the years my father has told me a bunch of crazy stories about all the stuff he got up to when he was around 18-19 and recently he was telling me the story of how he almost bought a FOURTH car in 1978, when he was 19 years old. He didn't have new cars, they were all from the 1950s. But how did a kid his age afford so many project cars? He had a union job at a grocery store. He was making $13 CAD($9.83 USD) an hour in 1978, the equivalent of $56.23($42.53 USD) in 2023. For stocking shelves.
