Horrible boss but love the people I work with

Good Morning! I have to write this somewhere. My boss is HORRIBLE. I will use they/them pronouns for sake of anonymity. They point out every little thing I do wrong, but never say ANYTHING good I do. I am extremely motivated and hard working individual who is extremely passionate about law. I graduated from T14 law schools #1 in the class. Due to financial constrains, I have not taken bar exam just yet – therefore, working as a paralegal. At my law school, professor liked me because I was curious and always trying to find out more about issues and how could affect future development of law.

My school mates liked me because I never had problems with sharing my notes (at the end of the day, we are together in this). I always performed well on exams, and I always forced myself that I know everything in details.

Now, I am working in smaller law firm as I prefer work-life balance. Everyone that works with me have no complains about my work and always appreciate quick turn round of work and being very organized. Except my boss… He keeps critising me for EVERYTHING. One time he told me that everyone praised me at law school when he called my references, and he just does not get why.

I asked for more responsibilities as I know I can handle more – he told me not to be needy.

I told him that I am very diligent and I would appreciate if he could trust me more – he told me I am in no spot telling him what he can and cannot do.

I proposed a good mentoring program that everyone loved the idea – he told me that it is waste of time. (Even though he complained that we need more mentorship)

I requested time off so I can study for bar exam – he told me I was being unprofessional.

Etcetcetc…

I have no idea what to do or how to approach this. But I am losing my mind and more and more I am just working here because of $…
