Hello all, I am a long-time lurker on this sub, but this is my first post.
A little back story: I am a recent college graduate and moved to a big city to find my first long-term professional position. In the short term, I decided to apply for a part-time job with a major movie theater company in the United States while searching for a more permanent position.
So I got the part-time job two weeks ago, and communicating with the theater has been a struggle ever since. I was supposed to be given onboarding videos to watch, but those emails only came once I reached out. I then went in to do the onboarding paperwork, I asked when I would receive the schedule and was told I should receive an email about it, but I needed to show up last Wednesday for my first shift. I did that but never got an email at that time. So when I went in for my first shift, I asked about it again and was given the same response I got when I went to do the onboarding paperwork.
Fast forward to this evening, I got a call from the theater telling me I missed a shift yesterday and am in the process of missing a shift today, and if I didn't come in, I was fired. I explained the situation, and they said I needed to come in. I told them I would try my best, but after some time, I thought, “No, this is bullshit. I shouldn't be treated like this when it is their fault.” I tried to call them back, and nobody picked up. So, I emailed HR and resigned. I didn't need the job and am currently in the last stages of the interview process for two professional positions I feel strongly about, so I am not too worried, but only some are as fortunate as me.
Companies should not be allowed to act like this. I am happy they showed their hand early, but I feel bad for everyone still working there; they deserve better. Anyway, I needed to vent and tell some people about my experience. This is my first ever genuinely negative experience with a job; I've had other jobs that maybe weren't great but were at least manageable, but this was my first genuinely terrible experience. Good luck to those out there with terrible jobs, and I wish you the best…
