Quit my summer job after a week. Here is what happened.

Hello there. I am 17. I got hired at this job a month ago. I went on vacation (which they said was fine) and came back. Essentially my work is a donut shop. I will not say the name for privacy reasons but it's new and just opened. During my interview the agreement was that I will work part time, 20 hours a week. This number has not been recognized. This week I have worked 40 hours, been asked to work an illegal 9 hour shift, and have been given 10 minute breaks but no lunch break. My boss is incredibly stingy and hypercritical about the quality of the donuts, and when something goes wrong says that we shouldn't be getting paid because we “don't do anything.” One incident I want to highlight is the deep fryer incident.

My boss is incredibly stingy and hypercritical about the quality of the donuts, and when something goes wrong says that we shouldn't be getting paid because we “don't do anything.”

One incident I want to highlight is the deep fryer incident. Essentially I got put on the corndog station because I'm good at it. The other day my manager filled up the oil too high causing the corn dogs to splatter oil onto me, burning my finger. I was visably using burn cream and also, plastic gloves. I was given no heat protection.

Eventually my boss scooped out the oil into a bowl. By that point I was on the verge of tears in pain and stress because there were 10 orders backed up.

Another incident that makes me quit was when there was a gallon of milk leaking. I put it in the fridge and ran to make boba drinks because we are short staffed and I did not have the time. My boss went into the back and got super mad at everyone, saying that we shouldn't get paid because we don't do anything. This isn't true.

In short my boss is chronically ungrateful and overworks his (mostly teenage) staff. We also receive little to no benefits. Also, my coworkers have not gotten paid for their training yet, which was 3 weeks ago.

There is also a distinct lack of food safety (we use towels with water to clean).

Overall it's a shitshow, glad I'm getting out.
