Interview questions for a volunteer position!

Hi guys! I run a nonprofit rescue in my spare time, and I have had a couple of dud candidates that caused some damage and I've lost a bit of sanity trying to fix. I find that people throwing rocks at my head have some good points sometimes, so I figured I'd ask this sub for feedback. Before we begin I'd like to make note that some of the questions will be for rescuers (people taking animals) while others are for people who are in a retail or office setting. I'm going to ask all interviewees the same questions regardless of position as some of them are to test morals or ethical knowledge. You are working behind your register and you just saw a person have their knees give out and collapse. The person is unconscious on the floor. You reach over and grab the store phone. Who do you…

  1. You are working behind your register and you just saw a person have their knees give out and collapse. The person is unconscious on the floor. You reach over and grab the store phone. Who do you call first, 911 or a manager? Why?

The answer is… obvious. You call 911. Calling a manager does nothing for the situation, after that you put all relevant safety and first aid training, make sure theyre breathing, heart is pumping, and bleeding is under control.

If you can, call a manager while doing the above or after making sure they're not dead. Management is all first aid and cpr certified, so if you need help, they should be the first call.

  1. You are out on a rescue call for a fish, you are packing up the tank, getting everything situated, and taking notes when the smell hits you. It's a deeply wrong smell that makes your stomach seize. The owner of the fish has opened up a side room, and you hear what sounds like a bird squawking inside, along with the sound of a child crying. The door closes and the smell dissipates. The owner says “oh sorry about that, I just needed to grab my broom to sweep out the aquarium area.”

What do you do?

Why?

  1. You're neighbor owns dogs. They constantly leave them out at night. The animals are skinny, and one appears to have a rash in between its legs. A police officer has visited them a few times.

You've asked them about the animals and they say theyre fine, nothing wrong.

What do you do and why?

  1. You're visiting an old family friend and discover a dog run in their back yard where the animals are kept. They're seen eating feces. The run is full of it, and there are at least half a dozen empty dog food bags in there. They've been slashed open and tossed inside. Several have been packed with poop. The animals are scrawny, their paws are bare infected flesh, and they just stare out at the world through the chain links with hollow eyes. One even has a dead front leg that has turned completely black where the hair is missing. You ask the friend what is with the dogs and they say “they're our sons, he takes care of them”

If you call animal control everyone will know it was you. You didn't make it subtle when you asked about them, and they saw you staring st them. These are close friends of the family and the relationship will be over between them and your parents, your parents may even side with them.
