Hi all,
The GM asked me this morning if I can “tactfully” ask my coworker if his laptop is here, or at his home. If it is at home, I am to ask him to bring it in so I can “run an update or something.” The laptop must be on premise by tomorrow morning.
This employee has been butting heads with the interim Controller. It's clear he will be let go. It hurts my integrity to ask to update his laptop, as if he's going to get it back. I don't know what I'd say if he asks when he's getting it back. He's a good guy, he's always at work and on time. He's got a good attitude too, as long as you have a good attitude with him. I want to tell him what's happening, but it could be used against me during his severance meeting if he brings it up. My impulse wishes to just tell him, so he can mentally prepare for what's to come.
What are your thoughts on deception vs. withholding the truth? Do you feel all variations of dishonesty break your integrity?
When I started here, one of my first projects was to implement a surveillance system. I installed 23+ cameras around the country club, golf shop, tennis shop, and parking lot. I was excited about the experience and freedom to manage the project and products on my own. Then leadership only had me utilize surveillance to:
– Report frequency and duration of smoke breaks select employees were taking
– Report how late a bartender stayed one evening (he was getting overtime, and was let go)
I am often in the know when employees are being investigated and scrutinized by leadership, and I know at least a day prior to an employees termination. It can be difficult, especially when you see your colleagues personal struggles, shortcomings, strengths, and accomplishments.
