Hi reddit
TLDR thinking of submitting an hr case against my manager aka biggest dick of all time. Done things that would warrant a case. Fortune 100 company. A bit nervous it will backfire. Any experience or recommendations?
I have been in sales for 3+ years at a fortune 100 tech co and under the same manager for 1.5 years. He is dominating, demanding, vindictive, and beyond self-absorbed. On one side, i do respect his work ethic and drive for results. He busts his ass more than he needs to, but demands the same out of his reps which is over the top. I am lucky because he likes me as a rep and haven’t gotten it bad relatively speaking. I am frankly the only person on my team who stands up to him. However, one of my colleagues was recently forced to quit (manager was making it unbearable to work and rescinded his approval for a week of remote work while he traveled to Europe, after the rep had paid for the trip. Basically said you can work in office or go and be fired so the rep quit). This isn’t the first time I’ve seen him do this to a rep. Very strong female favoritism which is gross. However, recently found out that at a dinner with colleagues (i declined to go because my boyfriend vehemently hates the guy), he was bragging about firing that rep and trash talking him. That rep is one of the nicest guys i know and frankly with 1.5 years of witnessing him act with poor discretion, i felt like i reached a ceiling of disgust. On top of that, another rep was there and he made a ton of other out of pocket comments. several times he told her he’d fire her if word got out about what he said at dinner (in front of colleagues!!!). She is an anxious (but heart of gold) person and was very upset by it.
I’d like to insert the fact here that a lot of indiscretions are ignored at our job. It is tech sales and incredibly demanding. That said, it’s usually a manager who is great to work for being a little creepy or doing not hr approved things and getting away with it because he’s liked, or a manager who is a total hardass and over the top but pretty much clean when it comes to their interactions with reps, so people hate them but there’s nothing to really submit. Not both, which is the category my manager falls into. Reps are actually terrified to speak out because he has a track record of taking down anyone who he thinks has it out for him. I think enough is enough. I have a long email drafted to HR about him and I’m just a bit nervous to send it. It has about a dozen of his more malicious and inappropriate behaviors listed out.
My thing is, he has been here for years, and has actually improved a lot from the manager he used to be. with reps and many other at his level or below, he has a terrible reputation of being a dick. How is he still here? I don’t doubt he’s had cases submitted against him in the past yet he’s still here. Would i just be fucking myself over by submitting this? Anyone with experience in this sort of scenario have feedback on how it went?
I went and verified the story about him threatening to fire that rep at dinner with the rep and told her i was thinking about going to HR. It broke my heart when she replied “This sounds lame but this is really brave of you lol. Everyone is so scared of him.” Makes my blood boil. Our job is stressful as is, and we just got hit with huge organizational changes. He is a just a small minded bully who enjoys intimidating reps. I really hate bullies.
