Context: I work in Washington State as a paraeducator.
Back in June I was given written confirmation that my current position as a paraeducator at my high school was, “Secure regardless of the ongoing funding issues.” Based on that guarantee, I applied and was accepted into a program at a local college that was contingent on my employment at this high school.
Today, one week before I was slated to return and two before school starts, I got a call from the executive HR director telling me that, “My services were not needed for this next school year,” IE fired. When I reminded him about this promise and that I had planed my life around this job, including spending time and money that I cannot get back, he said that this decision was final and there was nothing I can do.
I'm currently going to apply to other positions in hopes that I can salvage something, but I am definitely freaking out. I'm not financially prepared to be in this situation. Are they really able to retract the guarantee of a position like this? Is it worth speaking to a labor lawyer over this? Will I have a problem filing for unemployment?
If anyone could give me some advice while I formulate my thoughts I would greatly appreciate it.
