I work for Advance Auto, hired as a driver. Well, I've only driven once.
I was told that GPS use was forbidden, so I mentioned that due to my condition, I'd like to use a GPS (some autistic people can remember a city's worth of streets, I'm not one of them). I contacted the district manager, who said she would get in contact with HR. My store doesn't have a GM, he was fired shortly after hiring me (it took a while for me to be brought onboard because of this).
The district manager gets back to me, saying HR told her that according to company policy, GPS use is forbidden. I looked up the policy, and it is not forbidden. It specifically says, “Team Members may use a GPS enabled device as a navigational aid only.” I am then sent a “Request for Accommodation” form that I have to fill out, and have a physician fill out. Well… I can't afford a doctor visit at the moment, and I have also not been informed if I should go to a general practicioner, or a specialist in autism. This form is also for more severe cases, such as needing a chair to sit in due to an injury, etc. All I want is to mount my phone on the windshield and use it to help me find the places. I asked two other store managers for our other locations in the Quad Cities, and they both allow their drivers to use GPS. If it's against the rules, then why is that a thing?
I just looked at my schedule, and I'm set for another week of closing shifts. The past couple weeks, I had only gotten 13 hours, and was given only closing shifts (5pm-9:30pm, we stop all delivery operations at 6pm). I have had the least amount of hours of anyone in the store. I contacted the district manager, and she said I will not be allowed to drive until I get the form filled out (I have that in text). I'm getting frustrated. I feel like I'm being picked on, or they are making the process more tedious than it should be.
