A coworker harrassed and cussed me out but didn’t get fired

It was me and my boyfriend both who were harrassed, we work at the same place, who both got verbally abused and cussed out by a coworker. We work in manufacturing. Monday night we were on lunch break and were outside in the parking lot with a few other coworkers. All of a sudden, a coworker races into the lot, parks his car and SPRINTS out of his car and into the plant. A second later a cop pulls in. They asked us if we knew who that car belonged to, if he worked here. My boyfriend told the cops his name and that he sprinted inside. At this point our supervisor comes over wondering what was going on, and he lead the cops inside to find our fleeing coworker. The cops did find him, and he wasn't arrested but they did detain him.

The story is, our coworker was parked in a dealership parking lot half a block away from work. The police were called to go check it out, and the coworker fled when he saw police were pulling in.

After he was done being detained by the police, he comes back inside and goes up to my boyfriend and gets in his face, yelling and screaming offensive things. He told my boyfriend that I was a nasty ass bitch, that I stank like a troll, yada yada. He then turns on me and starts approaching me, calling me ugly and a troll, calling me a bitch and shouting at me.

My supervisor escorted him away and we assumed he was sent home. The supervisor let this guy stay after all that, so my boyfriend and I told him either he leaves or we're leaving. The coworker ended up being sent home.

We come into work next day and the incident was reported to HR. Our coworker was back as well, which pissed us off. My bf and I both spoke to HR about what happened. We ended up going home because we didn't feel comfortable working with our coworker after what happened, and we haven't been back since.

We were told an investigation needed to be done. Today we called HR and found out that they did not fire the employee. We can either come back and work after explaining we feel that we are in a hostile work environment, or quit.

We don't want to quit but we are upset over their decision. How the fuck is it ok for him to verbally abuse us and still have a job? We did not provoke him whatsoever or verbally abuse him back. He was the one causing a scene with the police by fleeing and getting caught. That alone was bad by itself.

I like my job and I don't want to quit. I plan on returning tomorrow but I don't think my boyfriend will. One of us has to work. We both think highly of this company and enjoy working for them, but the way they handled this incident has changed our opinion. It's a real shame.

I'm not sure what I wanna do yet. Maybe try going to 1st shift or find a new job. But like I said I like my job here and I make good money. I'm wondering if maybe we are blowing this out of proportion, because obviously the company didn't think our coworker's actions were bad enough that they still want to keep him. There was no shouting or name calling by either me or my bf, so it blows our minds how this guy was not fired.

Over and over, me specifically, was I called a nasty bitch and a troll, and this guy just gets a warning. It's such bullshit.
