I work for the NHS.
I worked for Ward A, the sister in charge was a weapons grade maniac, bully and gaslighter, her two nick names: Vader and Adolf….. Need time off for an emergency, go f**k yourself, work your times, don't do this, don't have a chat, don't be late. She herself, naturally did whatever she wanted, came in late, went home early and was the Queen of cigarette breaks.
I moved to a different Ward, Ward B. The sister in charge, cool as anything, completely flexible, approachable and appreciative, need to change your shifts, no problem, family emergency and you need to go home now, no problem. Need an extra coffee break, sure. As long as the work gets done, she doesn't mind. She works her set hours and pitches in
Ward A, haemorrhages staff like there is no tomorrow……someone gives in their notice at least once a month.
Ward B does not have any retention problems at all…the average someone leaves is about twice a year AND they still come back and visit/do a bank shift…….
Work is not fun, but ward A sister made it her mission to ensure her staff were unhappy
As the old saying goes, you attract bees with honey, not vinegar…..
