I know legal advice cannot be given, but can someone point me to some resources perhaps? (Kansas)
Background:
Friend of mine left a shitty situation and is roommates with someone who is less than ideal.
I haven't seen their lease yet to read it, but it appears that her and her roommate are supposed to be sharing rent equally, but the roommate doesn't, and so my friend keeps paying so they don't get evicted. She's also way behind on utilities for the same reason, she doesn't want shit to get shut off, so she pays as best she can, and he is taking advantage of the situation by paying “when he can”. The utilities, unfortunately, are all in her name. She came from an abusive situation, and is afraid of rocking the boat, but this dude is 100% taking advantage of her.
I told her that we'll try to get her out of this as best we can, but honestly, what can be done? I'll try to get a copy of her lease to see what she's responsible for, but again, she's afraid, and my hands are tied mostly other than offering advice. I am unable to put her up myself, so I'm hoping someone might have some advice or point me to some resources. I thought about trying to find a cheap or pro bono lawyer who might offer some advice as well.
In my mind, I was going to help her try to stash away money for rent for a new place so that she can gtfo, and maybe see if the utility companies might try to work with her via a payment plan or something. I also know what it's like to feel like your in a hopeless/helpless situation, so I'm just trying to do what I can.
If this post should go in another sub, please advise me that as well, please. 🙂
