Context:
I got promoted from part-time to full time (with benefits) because my one coworker quit yesterday. Literally 5 minutes after my coworker quit my boss asked me if I would accept working full time going forward. I kinda panicked and said yes.
Problem:
I’m taking a huge grad school entrance exam at the end of April and was planning on putting in my 2 weeks at the beginning of April so I could have a week off to focus on the exam. I have been planning on leaving for a while. I want to get paid more and work full time after I take my grad school entrance exam. I also lose too much sleep over this job. My boss is so intense, opinionated (in the type of way where she assumes she’s right and doesn’t care for feedback) and inconsistent it can be nauseating. And since I have been interviewing for positions that align with my compensation & career goals (and have more interviews lined up these next few weeks), this timing made sense for me. But I feel bad accepting a promotion even though I already have one foot out the door.
I know this is the right decision for me because my “promotion” means I will be taking on the workload of 2 people since my coworker quit, I have no pay increase, and my benefits (PTO, insurance, etc) will not take effect until 90 days. Also, my boss heavily implied that neither of us are going to be able to take basically any time off since I’m her only assistant, which is not sustainable for me.
But I feel like things could have been less messy if I said no at the initial offer. It’s not in writing yet though. My boss said I could start full time on Monday after I sign paperwork this week.
Should I be quiet and just keep my original plan to quit at the beginning of next month? Or is that even more of a crappy a move?
Any tips moving forward would be appreciated.
