Applying for manager position only to prevent a shitty manager from being hired

My (mid 40'sM) manager is leaving the company later in the summer. I haven't been there as long as others, but have previous experience in the industry as well as management experience in another industry. My manager is very kind, not a micro manager, and generally allows everyone to do their job while being treated as a professional. I don't really want to be the manager, but I'm worried that a new hire would change the work environment. Some coworkers have asked me if I would apply and encouraged me to do so. Is it wrong to apply for the job just to make sure that we don't get a manager that sucks?
