Are The Tech Layoffs Retaliation?

During the pandemic and shift to WFH workers had a great deal of leverage in that they were more easily able to get and accept job offers from competitors as they didn’t need to worry about relocation or commutes. Where I worked there was a good deal of discussion in early/mid ‘22 regarding increasing employee compensation for retention purposes – yet here we are not even a year later and now tens of thousands of jobs are being cut when a lot of these tech companies are still reporting record Profits and substantial growth despite the “economic crisis” that’s been used as the excuse for these layoffs. Is this really just the corporations reasserting their position over the employees by making arbitrary cuts? Is there anything that could be done aside from unionizing?
