Asked to supervise coworkers who hold my same rank. Is this normal? It makes me uncomfortable.

I'm posting here partly because this sub is more active than r/work, and partly because I feel like you guys will have equally relevant insight. So here's the deal: I'm vetting coworkers' work and writing up elaborate notes on it, ending with my recommendation for how to follow up with the employee should I find their work to be subpar or at odds with protocol. If followup is needed, my manager usually tells me I am to provide “coaching” for the employee. (i.e., I write them a long, formal letter about what they need to improve.) Some of these coworkers hold my same rank/title, so I'm beginning to feel uncomfortable about speaking to them as though I'm a superior when I'm not. Plus, I don't want them to feel belittled. Part of the problem is that this company has been slowly changing my duties and workload to be more managerial but has not increased my compensation. They tell me there are no management positions open, even as my work increases and I am providing coaching for my peers. This is my first corporate-ish job and I don't know what to make of it.
