Attacked by dog while working as a tutor

A while back, I worked for about two months for the family of someone I worked a part-time job with. I wasn’t familiar with him or his family, but wanted to help out and also thought the experience would be rewarding. I worked as a tutor for a little girl, helping her get her homework done correctly. The house was not very well kept. A lot of the time, the kitchen smelled horrible and the house just looked to be in disrepair, particular the backyard which was full of trash. One day (it was just the two of us) when I told the girl we could take a five minutes break, I suggested we go outside. The house was not very well kept. A lot of the time, the kitchen smelled horrible and the house just looked to be in disrepair, particular the backyard which was full of trash.

One day (it was just the two of us) when I told the girl we could take a five minutes break, I suggested we go outside. Their dog was outside, a sizable German Shepherd, but no one had told me it was aggressive or that I should avoid it. We went outside and I very carefully with the girl approached the dog. It straight up just jumped on top of me and started biting at my ribs. I screamed and the girl was freaking out, but I successfully kicked the dog off of me as gently as possible and ran back inside with her. I then excused myself to the bathroom trying my best not to cry or get upset with the girl for not warning me about her dog in that moment. I lifted my shirt and was cut up pretty badly on my ribs, light bleeding but lots of marks. I was in shock and didn’t know what to do. I just cleaned it as best I could came back to the girl and we continued our work.

I told her grandmother who told her daughter, the woman I work for, that their dog bit me and that I was alright. She apologized profusely. I politely left and texted the woman if she could send me proof that her dog did not have rabies which she did do, but offered little apology then acted like nothing happened.

I didn’t return and I feel bad for the girl but at the same time am really frustrated I was put into this situation. Needless to say, I will no longer be automatically trusting new dogs I meet. I might be stupid for not already being cautious but I was raised to trust animals. I am now terrified of German Shepherds.
