Got laid off… not sure what to do next.
I got laid off today. I feel the worst. My husband does Uber eats, but we do have enough saved in our account. We don't have kids. We can live fine financially for a while, but I just feel like shit. Ugh, I feel defeated. What can I do? I don't feel like looking for another job. I'm so over this shit.
Instead they keep trying to make the workday longer. It used to be much more common to work a 9-5 shift which included a 1 hr lunch, so you were actually working 7 hrs. Now many places have added an extra hour so it's 9-6 (or some variation of that). I would gladly skip a lunch hour for a 6 hour workday instead of 8. You could easily just eat something like a sandwich while working. An extra 2 hrs a day for yourself would make a huge improvement to most people's lives and health. It would also improve job performance. Shouldn't we be rioting in the streets for better work schedules? Are there actual logistical reasons for not changing our schedules or is it just greed and stupidity f**king us over as usual?
I have a facial deformity. Unfortunately, I’ve struggled my whole adult life with living wage employment. I've had hiring managers look at me in pure disgust before I even said a word. The job was purely data entry and I would not be interacting with customers. I knew I was not getting that position before I even opened my mouth. Then it's the coworkers. I've overheard so much shit from coworkers because they think I can't hear them. I've had coworkers say they were “uncomfortable” working with me because of my face. My current coworkers constantly wish that when I get fired, someone prettier will take my place. Yeah, I've tried the route of standing up for myself in the past. That was a degree and all my aspirations down the drain. I wouldn’t discourage others, but I don’t trust the system enough anymore. I live in a society that…
I left a job that massively underpaid me where I worked 80 hour weeks and due to the stress gained 40lbs, lost a ton of hair, and gained a big drinking problem (2.5 years sober) for another one that paid 2x as much with a great work/life balance. I just went back to the CTO of the first company to ask for a letter of recommendation because I at least did do incredible work for them and he told me I “stabbed him in the back” by leaving (they did lose $600 million in valuation because of it). WOW. Maybe they should learn to properly compensate their employees. It is a COMPANY'S responsibility to retain talent. Talent does not owe ANYTHING to a company when a better offer comes along. What an asshole. edit: This happened in 2019, and they're still this angry about it! They lost over $600 million…
Antiwork Discord?
Not sure if this is allowed but is there an antiwork discord that we can organize in? I want actionable steps to start organizing groups to protest, etc. Thanks.
AI's emergence as a mainstream thing wouldn't be a problem had the anti-work movement have a strong basal support. The works AI has deemed useless are no longer useful, but there were people that were poid for thoe jobs, and these were people with the potential to starve. Using the profits made out of the AI, we could easily make the ends of the people thta have lost their jobs meet. But no! They gotta earn their profits! It's pretty clear that jobs are on the decline, while the population in most developing countries is increasing. This means that there will be people who'll be left without jobs. While the aforementioned is true, it is also true that these workers can be saved a lot of trouble by getting paid from the profits that these AI bots generate. It's just filthy capitalism that keeps us from having a equitable society.…
