Proud of my wife

My wife is the GM at a small manufacturing shop. One of her top employees has been going through rough a patch in terms of his personal life. Custody issues with his baby mama, lost his license last year, sleeping on a friend's couch, car not working, etc. He approached her asking for OT to help get out of his hole. Not only did she clear him for unlimited OT, but she also called our family lawyer to look at his case and put a plan together. In the past month, she sat down with the guy and spelled out what he needed to do in the custody case, they scheduled an appointment at the DMV to get his license re-instated (and she drove him during the work day without having him clock out), helped him find an apartment and gave his end-of-year bonus early so he had the first,…

Absence advice. Please offer your input.

So for context I have been off work sick from 5th/9th, total of four days, all of which I followed procedure and contacted the business to notify them of my absence. I let shift managers on the prior shift know or left a voicemail if nobody was available as per policy. That's my responsibility done in my eyes, I'm not obligated to answer calls for any reason to anybody. The 10th/11th/12th are rest days, not scheduled. I received calls on each of these days which have been missed/ignored as I don't see a reason to speak to work on rest days. Today I received a letter stating they tried to contact me on the 8th/9th/10th/11th and was unsuccessful, that being unreachable is a breach of absence policies. Can you class it as being unreachable when I have let them know on scheduled work days that I'd be unable to attend.

Anyone get hired without an interview, and it worked out?

I took a position in a school district and it didn’t require an interview. It did require background check, fingerprinting, references etc. Basically I had to sub it a resume, fill out two applications (prelim and a full one), then do all the necessary checks and submit references. I work as a sub so it’s not a traditional job and people told it it seemed sus there was no interview. It’s an on call position so you get called in or check the website for openings and select any available slots. It’s the biggest SD in the county too, 17 schools and I’m signed up to sub at all of them, so I guess there’s a decent chance of working because I’ve been able to go in two days on a row which was immediately after I started. I use this money to supplement my disability so I don’t need…

Filed a lawsuit and won

Every thread in this sub is full of people telling the OP to sue. But we never hear the follow up. Can you guys share your lawsuit stories about a time you took an unfair employer to court and won?

Apparently, working for 2 years isn’t experience

I work at a company that is over 100 years and multinational. I had 2 years of experience in my home country, after which I shifted to Canada. My manager told me this. “You're doing a great job. You have the potential to get there. I thought it would take you 2-3 months to get here, but this is good. See, to me, you aren't someone who has 2 years of experience but someone who graduated and somehow worked for 16 months. I know I shouldn't say this, but if you work only 8 hours, you won't get there. When someone offers you $3 for a job where you can learn and $5 for a job where you don't, you should take the $3 job.” The fact that he deemed my experience irrelevant pisses me off. First of all, he said 16 months, bitch, I interned there for 6 months…

I’m a teacher. A good one. But I have to keep quitting over poor payment and treatment. I hate this.

I just had a heartbreaking week of cards and gifts from students devastated to be losing me. It feels narcissistic to even say that, but my heavy bag is full of proof even my lacking self-esteem can't argue with. All week I kept telling my students to hold out hope — my replacement could be great or even better — but they know that's highly unlikely and so do I. I know what the job demands and what it pays. Their school abused me, overworked me, and underpayed me. I'm leaving for a slightly less toxic teaching job, but even that's only for a year or two and then I will have to return to computer science, which makes me miserable but actually pays well. A student of mine just stopped by before getting off the train to reiterate how much I'll be missed. I hate this so much. I…
