A relative of mine told me that he’s fired employees for using their sick pay for things other than being sick (going to concerts etc). He said he finds out from social media or employee chatter and fires them immediately. This is in California. Is this legal?
Stuck at a bad workplace
How do you deal with a workplace you're done with (toxic/bad mgmt) and haven't gotten an offer for a new one so you can't just up and leave? For the past 3-5 months, I wake up and do 20-30 applications every morning, then again before I go to bed. I work in finance and have been trying to transition to tech for 2 years, but lucky me now the hiring freeze is in effect. So I started to apply to roles within my field/industry. I genuinely want to know what other people do in this situation, even if the options sound terrible.
I worked at a 12-person startup forseveral years, and then moved on to one of those mega, we-have-eighty-acquisitions-type of conglomerate. Here are the key differences: Startup: Forced to come into the shitty warehouse office so “we can see all your smiling faces” Having the CEO sit in an office directly across from you so he passively-aggressively complains to your manager when you text on your lunch break Getting passive aggressive emails about Instagram hogging the office bandwidth (I switched to mobile data after that lol) Two people quitting because of said CEO meaning I have to take on their jobs with no reprieve in sight Being casually bullied into performing job functions I'm not comfortable with (e.g. handling sales orders, recruiting, etc. when I'm a coder) because “we all need to adaptable.” Watching your permanent desk setup with all your notes and documentation get dismantled for a hotdesking setup because…
I have a meeting with our executive team tomorrow morning to talk about a plan for our wages as a company. I work for a nonprofit and all of our funding is grant-based. They claim they entire company average is 21.10/hr but even I’m below that and I know that everyone in our executive office (50 out of 210) has a 100k-150k/yr salary. Our minimum wage just went up a 1.25/hr here and I know for a fact quite a few people are planning to leave and find less stressful jobs with better pay. Any advice on what I could add to this meeting to make a difference?
I have been working this job 100% remotely for about 3 months. All communication has been online, except for one in-person company meeting in which we discussed the success of the company and got to know each other better. My boss and I have discussed raises, promotions, and they have always given positive feedback about my work. I recently went on a trip abroad to visit family for the holidays, and employer had approved for me to work remotely (I need the money and decided not to take unpaid time off, as I do not have PTO accrued.) Unfortunately I had very flakey internet, which I had not expected when planning the trip, and couldn't do as much work as I intended to. I communicated this to my boss, and I decided to just work overtime and make up for it when I returned home. What else could I do?…
Husbands Boss Saying He Shouldn’t Grieve
TW: Pregnancy Loss I’m going to try to limit details to not possibly get my husband in trouble here. I’m not sure where to share this honestly. My husbands boss has always been a jerk. The company even moved him locations years ago because he said offensive things to workers so they put him in a location with only a couple of workers, when he definitely should have been fired. He constantly says rude things, hardly works, and it’s clear no one likes him. We just lost our baby about halfway through the pregnancy and thankfully the HR department was more than kind in working with us and finding every way to give him time off. He got a few days of bereavement and they let him take a few extra days off as well. They have been extremely sympathetic. The night it happened was pretty traumatic and I lost…
hey all! so i’ve been at my current job for four months, before this i took a two year break from “traditional” work and lived off of my savings and doing side gigs. i’m in retail management, 40+ hours per week, great benefits and started off with 25 days of pto, also pretty good pay for being 24 years old with only two years of experience in the same position (in a different company), yet i’m still living paycheck to paycheck with no room to save anything. now, after four months of being on my feet for 9 hours a day and the heavy lifting daily, i’m remembering why i quit my old job two 1/2 years ago. i have had back and hip problems since i was thirteen, and it’s getting to the point where the pain is unbearable. i thought i could push through it for the pay…
“This is a formal letter regarding your lack of attendance at work. As of the date of this today, you have failed to come to work for at least three consecutive shifts. We have made several attempts to contact you directly about this matter to no avail. These unexcused absences were not requested nor previously approved. As we have no way of determining if you plan to return to work, we have no choice but to assume you have abandoned your position with us.” I missed THREE DAYS. One for nausea, one for debilitating pain, and the last one (the only one actually my own fault) for oversleeping and missing my shift. They have ABSOLUTELY NOT made ANY attempts at contacting me. Nothing in their shitty little email system, either. ” We don't know if you'll come back in”? REALLY?? They barely gave me any fucking shifts! I got about…
