Hearing the outrage on the GloRilla job posting made me think more about my situation. So I work for a known person in the entertainment industry and I’m getting paid below 350 doing part time as an independent contractor. This is my first industry job and I was excited for the opportunity as this person knows that I’m trying to get my foot in the door. But as months have gone by I feel like I’m being taken advantage of. I’ve been asked to contribute and write things that I will not be compensated for along with compliments. How long should I stick around as this person can help me get into the industry? I signed a contract.

Does paid leave mean im done?
I got in trouble today for taking too long of breaks. I was called into HR and some guy and one of my Union stewards were there. Apparently they investigated me between December 7-9th and found I was taking too long of breaks, and leaving the property without punching my badge or letting anyone know. From the sounds of it and what went down today it doesnt sound the best. Its my first time getting in trouble and we’re Unionized I just am scared too lose this job… Ive had alot going on lately. They ended the investigation thing because I got a little worked up with myself over it and I guess they want to finish it on another day. I am on paid leave until further notice… how screwed am I guys?
Record profit, same pay, more hours
I’ve worked on construction sites digging pits and getting muddy, I was a soldier filling sandbags with rocks only to empty them a week later, and I didn’t feel like a slave until I got a part time job in an electric supply warehouse. This company keeps boasting about having their most profitable year to-date, and they love to tell us about it every meeting. The bosses got a ski lodge to celebrate. The warehouse guys got more 12 hour nights. I realized this was exploitation. Late to the party, I know. Our hard work in this world is rewarded with more hard work and nothing is being done about it. The rich keep getting richer from the working man who does what he’s told to keep a roof over his head. When will this shit end?
Hard workers
Work hard!!! For 10.00 an hour! Pasadena,TX
I just got a 20 cent per hour raise after 7 years of no raise….have never had a bonus, Christmas bonus or otherwise. I do have a double degree in human services- I can’t specify- as it is extremely specific and would dox me. thanks for my extra $2 per day…..I can now afford to have a coffee again:) I suppose I should be grateful? With inflation over the last 7 years that’s like a few (+) grand less then when I started. I did the math a few years ago and it was devastating.. I don’t remember the numbers and I don’t want to look them up again cause I already struggle to not cry every pay day…. Social services fucking sucks across the industry, so if I move…I just get the same pay with less vacation. Any ideas about how to get out of the industry with no…
I used to admire rich people.
Now they just scare me. After having met some of them, I just do not think they are good people. And they have too much power. They use nasty, sneaky tactics to get ahead. One of my classmates’s dad is a rich entrepreneur. He told me he doesn’t tell people his business secrets, because people “won’t like how the sausage is made.”
I am often amazed during occasions where family members appear for professional socializing (networking event, holiday event, being invited into homes with family hosting etc.) In my experience most reasonable people don't try to show off that they are family (cousins, children, nieces and nephews) introducing each other into working for the same company, or networking for each other's gains. But there are people who are unaware their family better stay out of professional connections. I often think if people are not successful or respected enough, they shouldn't show their family to their professional circle. It amazes me that they have family who are stuck with them. A-holes who are not honest about money, have behavioral problems, incompetent people who have more failures than successes under their name, people who waste other's resources more than they earn, people are not intelligent to have a real solution to problems but got…
Stealing our tips, no one cares.
We pool tips where I work. When we opened, we had leads that functioned like the retail version of head servers, mangers, and a general manger. Managers were on salary and did not get tips. When the company started seeing how much we were getting in tips, they “dissolved” the manager position and instead doled out all of the mundane managerial duties to the leads. The leads now create the schedule, place orders for the store, handle all of the money, allow or disallow time off requests etc. The company pays them a few dollars more an hour and they get an equal share of the tips, just like before. They even openly refer to the “leads” as manager on duty. I’m in California and this is illegal. We have filed two complaints with the state and nothing has happened. We even called to be sure that this was a…
Just got word from folks that still work at my old company that they’re going to be moving to a total WFH after the new year. We were WFH for over two years bc of the pandemic, and did a GREAT job at it. … then they went to a “hybrid model” where they required you to work from their new location one week a month. This new location required you to pay for parking ($50 a month!), and you couldn’t pay per week. Then they said “sharing passes isn’t allowed” – each team had a different week to work from the office, but they wanted to maximize the $ they were milking from their employees since they owned the parking structure. I as well as ~ 20 other employees in the department left for other gigs bc of this. They lost a collective of centuries of experience and expertise…
I got laid off 2 weeks ago and that is a direct quote from the worksource agent Im obligated to meet with before I can get unemployment benefits. Bold of you to assume I still have dreams, sir. I haven't had a dream job in years. I don't dream about working. After 13 years of non stop work, my ideal job is blacking out for 40 hours a week and having money show up in my account accordingly.
