Throwaway account, just in case.
My employer is cutting costs because “profits are down.” (To be clear, they're still making a profit, just not as much as usual.) So rather than hire enough people to support this particular team, myself and others have been cross trained and asked to spend 25% of our time doing this other team's job. This work is totally new to me; I've been at this company 6 years and moved around a few times between teams, but I've never been on this team nor done anything like it.
I already work 40 hours a week doing my own job. I'm still expected to get all of my own work done, so now on top of those 40 hours doing my job I am expected to work 10 more hours doing the other job.
I don't like overtime. I have a life, and I'm currently planning my wedding which takes up a lot of time. I just plain don't have ten extra hours a week to devote to this company. And I shouldn't have to. 40 hours is enough.
Do I have any say in this, or do I just have to go along with it in order to keep my job? Does anyone have any experience with getting out of this kind of thing? I have a meeting with my boss today and I'd love to tell her how I feel about this, while also not getting fired. I'd honestly quit if I thought I could make the same money anywhere else, but it's complicated.
