Im 21, and Im pretty experienced now in the trades, specifically carpentry, flooring, cabinetry and fine furniture/woodworking shops
Learnt from some of the best, but also had some jobs I will describe now.
The jobs that have you sanding or sweeping for hours, days, weeks, months and not teach you any skill that you can get started on improving. If you wanted to get better at football you’d go play it. You wouldnt stand around in the lockers and sweep the floor
But it seems that the trades have invented a new logic. If you look at the carpentry subreddit and type in “apprenticeship “ there is plenty of HORROR STORIES written in hind sight. Unions lure you with BASIC human necessities such as, a short vacation, dues you pay for , “free” health care and other goofy promises..
Under the premise that you of course, have your own TOOLS to bring to the job, you know, those that cost 120 dollars to begin with, at LEAST..
Guys, if you are young, and want a job you can be proud of and respected for, do not go into just any trade job, at the very least avoid the ones not unionized. But try to avoid them entirely. They will have you sweeping and if theres no work you’ll stand there idling going insane.. They wont give you a chance to improve your skills or show your intellect and fast learning as a young person.
Another lie they posed often is that trade jobs nowadays are great and they’re getting paid more than lawyers!
the world and the jobs are getting more horrible and more lies are being set up every day.. Now you understand why everyone and their mother wants to become an instagram influencer now.
