I work for a small startup MSP (Managed IT services for businesses) company. I originally was hired as a computer technician to do retail repairs, I did that for a year and found a better opportunity doing IT and Web Development for a local manufacturer. My boss countered and offered me web development (what I am really after) and a position in their new MSP startup. My first task was to rebuild the main website( was in WordPress, I rebuilt using laravel). After a month or so I wanted to show them the new website I was tasked to build (while maintaining my responsibilities on the helpdesk). My boss kept giving excuses about why he couldn't meet and after doing this for a few weeks, he created a ticket that we need to outsource the website to Upwork. Uh okay? Then I got a ticket that had me test strobe lights for several hours a day… I fought back on this one a bit. And now I got a ticket that I need to complete a 6 month certification for marketing… I'm all for professional development, but this takes away from my field and what I focus on everyday why not make me get my Net+ or MS900. (Oh and the website I was tasked to build was 6 months ago at this point and the Upwork dev is not done yet, despite me creating a social media website in my downtime at work!). I just don't understand why they don't invest in the skills I already have that are relevant to my field. My coworker is literally playing YouTube/WoW all day, why not go after him for these 'special assignments'?
My plan right now is to finish my website and use that as my portfolio to get a different job as a web developer.
Although I am open to other ideas!
