Boss trying to get me fired: next steps?

A few months ago, the GM at the fast food restaurant I work in hired a man for the maintenance position. I have experience with maintenance, so I offered to train him. When texting the GM about it, he said that he could start working as long as his paperwork was completed. I came in at the agreed upon time, and checked his paperwork (mind you, I have no experience with the hiring process so I should not be the one checking, since I wouldn’t know what to look for). Everything looked good, so he began working. We had troubles getting him clocked in on the fingerprint scanner, so I recorded his time punches on paper, assuming the GM could put them in later. I sent a message at this time to the GM stating that we weren’t able to get him clocked in. After an hour, GM got back…

After an hour, GM got back to me stating that there was an issue with the paperwork and he would look into it. After 3.5 hours of this guy working, GM finally got back to me saying there was a problem, the guy’s wife somehow was listed in the system and he couldn’t fix it without restarting the hiring process. I was getting ready to leave, so I told him that he would need to check in with the new guy the following day to fix the issue, and that I wrote down his time punches. GM was then furious, saying “What? He can’t work if he’s not in the system?!!”

That was the end of my part in the story. Fast forward, it’s weeks later and the new guy has tried relentlessly to get a hold of the GM to get the issue resolved. He was never paid for the 5 hours of work he put in that day, and did everything he was supposed to in order to proceed with the rehiring process. GM decided he didn’t want to hire the new guy (ironic because he already worked) and had been blowing him off for nearly two months. New guy told GM last week that he had 3 days to figure it out so he could get paid, or he would call corporate. Guess what? He called corporate.

Now GM is throwing me under the bus. He told corporate that I directly disobeyed orders and allowed new guy to work. I am concerned for my job, and I’m not sure how to defend besides showing text messages. My corporation is known for raking down employees during an investigation.

Thank you for reading this very long post.
