Boss unfairly asking things of unpaid intern

Hi all! I'm asking this for a friend She is an unpaid intern for a non profit and theres an event coming up for which they flew out a couple of other (unpaid) interns. Essentially, her boss asked that she host two of these interns and originally offered no payment. (Apparently they found it too expensive to put them in a hotel even though she says they have sponsors) She accepted because of a misunderstanding around putting certain people in hotels, etc. (not that its too important, just giving the reason why) After talking to us, shes realized that its way out of line for them to ask this of her and is now trying to seek payment. Only problem is that she has certain limitations around working in another country that doesnt allow for her to be paid here. She hopes she can be paid in cash or something.…

Im wondering if there are any blatant workplace violations happening here? I know it feels inherently wrong for a boss to ask this of her, but if theres any specific rule/law disallowing it? I think itd be helpful for her to know. I dont think she'd want to take any legal action, but shes instead looking to get paid. If she is hosting two people for 5 days, what is a good amount to be asked to be compensated, keeping in mind this is in a major city? Shes in a position where it seems/feels like she might have to tread carefully, as she doesnt want to burn any bridges, but is upset about being taken advantage of. Any advice is appreciated!
