I worked at a hand car wash which was very exploitative- they would overhire staff and clock you on and off depending on if their was business. You could spend the whole day in the staff room yet only work for an hour or so.
The boss would play favorites in giving decent hours. After finishing the day he would trash talk our coworkers who he deemed 'worked slowly' or had requested a day off. He would then choose a particular employee and ask 'isn't is so?'.
If an employee did not engage in the trash talk then he would cut their hours by either asking them to come in late, or by giving them the 'staff room waiting treatment'
