Can my employer say I owe them money?

So I work in retail and for some unexplainable reason the money didn’t go through on the eftpos machine, despite me and my coworker checking transactions and following the correct procedure to the best of our knowledge/ability. Employer says they don’t know why the eftpos machine is unaccepting payments. Employer says we should have been more careful (even though we were already careful and following correct procedures). So the amount of money missing (three digits, large amount to me personally) has to be paid out of me/coworker’s pockets. Is that legal? Our contract does have a general clause saying that employee may be fined for damaging company property. Has this happened to anyone else before? Is this legal in NZ?
