Can my (former) boss refuse to disclose if I’m still employed?

Basically I was working for a business that was making a bunch of very clear labor violations and I was punished for bringing them up. Then I got COVID. After I returned from having COVID my hours had been reduced and my coworker had been put on “a break.” Coworker did nothing wrong but our boss didn't get their way putting someone else on “break” due to actual laws preventing it. So other coworker was chosen instead. It is not completely a money issue. In fact money doesn't really seem to be an issue at all. Sometimes I wonder if we were just wondering money… People are being paid under the table. However, the issue is that it has been impossible to actually find out of my former coworker is still employed or has been silently fired Is this legal?
