Can someone explain unemployment benefits to me?

I’m 17 and my hours got cut like crazy at my job. I’ve been working here for almost a year and I realized I might qualify. I have no idea how it works though. Will my bosses find out I applied for it? I’m just curious and want to know everything before I do it. Also my legal name is getting changed soon and I’m wondering if that is going to mess things up
