Can someone please help me understand this?

Why do companies constantly screw over their most loyal employees? It makes no sense to me, I keep seeing these people get screwed again and again for being loyal and changing jobs then the company gets screwed over and loses money. It makes no logistical sense to me for companies to only give paltry raises to loyal employees only for them to quit and have to spend even more money to replace and train a new employee. I understand for large corporations it's hard to keep track of every person employed but if you have someone who does truly stand out work why not try to keep them? To me it makes sense to pay a stand out employee that does 2x the normal work 1.75-2x the amount of money rather than skimp on their raise have them quit and the overall productivity and profits down.
