So a few years ago I applied for a position for which I was well suited and it was a contractor doing work for a 'four-letter' government agency in the D.C. suburbs. I arrived 15 minutes ahead of time and checked-in with an apparently very annoyed receptionist who made a call that I was in the lobby and didn't offer me a seat or direct me to anywhere to sit. Okay, well whatever. I mean it was already 9AM and I'm sure her day is already ugly, so I'll just wait like an idiot across the room where I spy a few open chairs around a table. A half hour rolls by and eventually someone walks up to the receptionist and chats for a moment before casting an eye in my direction and proceeds to walk over to me. Mind you, about 100+ people have been moving in/out of this…

How do I escape the minimum wage life?
I am 29 male and I am currently stuck at a job making slightly above minimum wage. I work as a security guard and I make around $11hr. I also currently live with my dad in order to save money. I've been applying to other jobs to get a better one and I've been rejected by every single one of them. I've updated my resume countless times and so far it does not seem to work. My work history: I currently work as a security guard and I've been here for 4 years. I've worked variety of posts from garages, to office buildings, front desks, to monitoring cameras, to early voting booths. Most of my jobs previously have been either volunteer. For example my job before security I was working at a computer repair shop doing mostly fixing computer programs, removing anti virus software, answering customer complaints, and things like…
Context: (I’m a security officer)So my supervisor sent this email out to the team today after yesterday(I’d imagine) no one responded to his phone calls to get the shift covered. Yesterday was my last day off for the week and after working 48 hours this week I really like to use my days off to unwind and catch up for the week as my shifts start at 7am until 3pm leading me to go to sleep at 9am so I can be functional in the morning. So yesterday my supervisor calls me at 9am like 4 times as well as receiving multiple texts for me to come in from 11-4pm. I had just stayed up til 3 am the day prior because you know…it’s my day off and I never get to stay up as a result. I tell him I’m just waking up and I have commitments (doing laundry…
Working for family sucks!
I’ve been sticking it out at my families business for years now. I started part time when I was 16 and I’m 25 now. I have learned alot about the products we sell but not much about how the business runs. My grandfather is the owner he insists me staying but he doesn’t come in anymore. I technically work under my uncle and even he himself has said that he wants family to stay but has not really helped me either. Im basically one of the other employees but different because I’m the owners grandson. This has made us difficult because I’ve dealt with jealousy from other employees, I don’t feel like I get much responsibility as others, I new coworker try’s to step on my toes and do my job and gets words of praise from my uncle for it. Im frustrated because I don’t want to waste my…
My wife recently got a job in January and works at a tax company and they are about to do layoffs since tax season is ending. Well she did such a good job, her boss offered her to be the manager with no additional raise at $13/hr. They said she can be the manager or be let off for 8 weeks but no guarantee of getting her job back. She hasn't had a job since covid and we need the extra money she's bringing in. I told her to ask her bosses boss(district manager) for a raise if she takes it or at least PTO for certain days we have planned coming up. So we shall see how that goes
I am thinking of just starting all over. What careers seem to have a decent work-life balance with great pay, that does not require a Bachelor’s degree ?? My background is in digital marketing and graphic design.
The worst part being that management finds it funny and laughs openly. I find it thoroughly disgusting and weird for a man in his 50s to walk around public places, snapping pictures with nasty comments about who is wearing what. Should I say something directly to him, or complain? What would you do?
I was just in a marketing/rebranding meeting for the company I work for, and in this meeting they asked us what our job meant to us. An overwhelming amount of coworkers had stories about how they love to spend time at work after hours, all their best friends are coworkers, and basically that their life revolves around their work here. Now, I know this doesn't mean that I have to feel this way (and I definitely do NOT, they love to preach that this is the best place ever to work when we have a large amount of significant flaws) but the pressure from literally everyone else to have your life revolve around this business is just, insane. And honestly sad. I just wanted to know if anyone else works for a company where this “motto” is so significant that you're going to hear about it as apart of the…
