I am keeping things kinda vague here so bear with me. I am a fundraiser for a large university and am assigned to a particular unit of that university. That unit has a union for a certain segment of its workforce who have been in negations for almost a year and still don't have a contract. I don't know if a strike is imminent but similar organizations in our city have had successful strikes recently. How do I, as a colleague and a friend, support this union and their efforts while not being a member, not being eligible to be a member, and, therefore, lack the protections they will have if they go on strike or anything like that. If they go on strike, would I be considered 'crossing the picket line' if I continue to work? How can I best be of support and solidarity in this position?
I started working for a huge company last March. I was brought on as a contractor with a temp to perm promise. The contract kept being extended. I was then told headcount had been approved for me to come on in January. Three weeks ago, I was told that they were retracting that offer due to changing business conditions, but they want to keep me as a contractor for 12 more months. They have been liaising with the legal team to draft me a new contract, rather than simply extending it again with my usual contractual terms. They have played me so much I don't know what's going to happen, and with so many broken promises, I don't know if it's actually going to happen. They are being evasive with me, won't give me any updates and are holding off to tell me the new contract terms. The current contract…
For anyone thinking this isn't happening already. A number of graphic artist already been replaced by AI artist. Ghost writers, coders, and others are starting to be hit. If you can't pay more than the local mcdonalds, just close your business
President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.” Many Americans are okay with going to food pantries in their 80s while working at walmart, as long as they can deny darker people a decent quality of life too. How many of these boomers and elderly people who still work and live paycheck to paycheck complained about integration, affirmative action, non-white immigrants, women swearing, women having rights, women who don't have kids, gay people minding their own business in the park, interracial couples on tv. These are a hate-filled people, content to watch the world burn if it means a dark person is closer to the fire.
Not much else to say here. No employment papers were signed, this was a smaller business. Was promised $110/day. Walked off the job while the owner was not there, texted him informing him I left, asked what he needs to pay me, haven't heard from him since. It has been a week. How do I handle this?
