Category: Antiwork
There have been some interesting historical points made that the basics of American personnel management originated to extract the maximum possible amount of work from slaves. American employers act like they own you during work hours, is it the same in other countries? Unreasonable demands, demanding strict obedience, expecting unpaid work. Small employers seem especially bad.
Is Quitting the Right Thing Here?
Hi, first time server here. I’m 22M. I’ve been working at a very large family owned restaurant for about a month and a half, and I’m about to quit now. Two of the three managers (not owners) are husband and wife. The husband makes a habit of touching the younger female servers’ lower backs, and when he was asked to stop by an older woman sticking up for the girls, they were all fired by the wife manager. We’re not typically given breaks on our 12+ hour shifts. Today I was about to pass out (low blood sugar) and asked the third manager if I could take a break. He said yes of course. The wife manager found out, grabbed me by the shoulders really hard and shook me, calling me a “whiney toddler baby” and that I can’t have a break because other people are tired too. She used…
I can’t keep working
I’m neurodiverse and mentally ill. I can’t stand working for others. Makes me want to kms. I just want to make art and hang out with my dog. How will I get buy though? How do I pay my medical bills, rent and buy food?
I started at a biotechnology company almost 6 months ago to the day. Everyone at work tells me that they feel part of a family and that the company is a great place to work, I feel it's cult like. We have a stand up group meeting every morning often this will be a positivity circle – we say something nice about a team member. Often this is a criticism circle where we say something negative about a team member. Every week we have a 1-1 meeting with our boss for an hour to discuss criticisms of each other, mood at work, life goals and less so relevant day to day tasks. I'm always told that I perform well and quickly at work but I'm not introspective enough and I'm melancholy (I refute this). My bosses boss also regularly calls me in for these meetings, he suggests that until he…
This was a realization that hit me really hard recently. I was catching up with an old friend of mine, and as we were talking, we were talking about our work and our career. I had recently begun getting my chartered accountant, while he has about 6 months left to go, and he told me that his company is looking to hire a new accountant, the same title as what I hold at my company. And the beginning salary begins with the first digit being + 2 to my current salary, and it took me a whole lot of meetings and calls to even get to that point. Not only that, they have better support for my CA support, as well as staff trainings. Took me 30 minutes to fix up my resume and I am in the final stage of the recruitment process (reference part). And my friend, bless…
I ran into a rough patch and ended up homeless, I was fortunate enough that only after staying in a shelter for 2 months, I was able to find a new job to help me get back on my feet. Or at least that's what I thought. I got hired for a serving job at a restaurant also doubling as a bartender, I asked questions received answers, did my background check and passed, and went to my training which included some computer tests, today. They gave me the company shirt to wear, but for some reason they didn't give me shoes. I learned today at training that I need to have black slip proof shoes to be a server which is fine and that's apparently common for the job, but when I asked why they didn't include it with the rest of the uniform they told me I have to…
