TLDR at the bottom. Also karma payback from the universe. This happened in the early 2000's. Back then I was working for a computer company. I wont name name it but I can tell you its big and blue. So the company was also doing some BPO work. Both internally and externally. I was working in an account which outsourced internally. Basically the same company in another country (a) would outsource certain processes to itself but in another country (b). Due to the currency exchange (a) could have (b) do the job cheaper. The difference would be profit. So I started from the bottom, from an entry level position and got to a position where I was doing the KPI reports. These reports are sent to the main comp (a) and the client. From this report they found out things like productivity, faults, how much to charge the clients, penalties…
My Department’s Mandatory Overtime
I work at a control centre that operates 24/7 but there's only two solid shifts with partial teams (because there's not enough employees to fill up a shift) and one person doing extended operating hours (EOH). To the point that an employee's monthly overtime would meet the government's mandated maximum monthly OT (72 hours) because people are coming back on their days off to work overtime. This is how the shift works: AM – 5am to 3pm (OT from 1:50pm to 3pm) PM – 3pm to 2am (OT from 3pm to 5pm) EOH – 5pm to 5am (OT from 5pm to 9pm) There's supposed to be 13 people per shift but, on a good day, we only have 10. I've worked shifts before and there's always been 3 shifts (eg. 7am to 3pm, 3pm to 11pm, 11pm to 7am). Our theory is that the company is trying to cut cost…
I’ve had to leave work for the day, or leave to work from home a few times due to migraines. My fellow migraine suffers will know that there is basically no preventative medicine for migraines, and it all tends to be reactive. I’ve sought treatment for migraines in the past, but they are comorbid with another chronic condition that my doctor knows I have, and my boss knows I have. I literally could not get any treatment for my migraines whatsoever so I had to resort to medical marijuana for them. If you look at my medical marijuana card, the condition listed as the reason that I have it is migraines. Boss is aware I have a MMJ card for both and doesn’t care. Today I had to leave work again, and my boss insinuated that it was time to seek treatment for my migraines to “figure them out.” I…
I was thinking about the arguments people make about footballers getting paid too much, but they're not really. Other companies should actually learn a thing or two. The average WTR 'wage / turnover ratio' in the English Premier League is 72%. So if a club turns over £100 million, £72 million will go to staff (player) wages. Average in other industries: Retail: 10% to 20% Construction: 20% Hospitality: 30% Manufacturing: 12% So instead of saying footballers are being paid too much, what we should actually be saying is that footballers are being paid fairly, and the rest of us should also be paid more than a pathetic percentage of our companies turnover. If Microsoft paid the same WTR of 72% on their turnover of their $198,000,000,000 turnover that would be $142,560,000,000 in staff wages. Divided equally among their 221,000 global staff would be $645,067.
Wage theft, what to do?
So a multi-tiered question. My daughter (15) works at a franchised fast food place (not mcds) for a while I didn't think her paychecks equaled hours worked and finally she told me that the owner will edit people's hours based on labor budget or just any random ass reason “oh you were lazy so I'm docking you 3hrs” It's not so much the kids, if my math is right my daughter has only been shorted a couple hours, it's a lot worse in the FT adult workers per my kid. So the question is, how do I prove it if my kid is being shorted? They don't have an online system, just a time card they fill out daily. Should she take a picture of the time card each day then I can try to do the math myself? And if I can prove it who do I call? We're…
Working for a charity (rant)
So this is my first proper, full-time job. I enjoy what I do for this charity and I do feel like I make a bit of a difference. But wow, the higher-ups don't care about staff at all! The pay is horrendous, there's no little bonuses, perks, or recognition for good work, loyalty or holidays. Our current office has a massive infrastructural problem that's also a health risk and we've just been left working in these conditions for months. I really like working for a charity but honestly my gut keeps telling me to get out 🙁

$80, getting kicked out
Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to read this. I am in a really tough spot and it looks like I will soon be out of home. This all stems from my hard ass landlord increasing my rent payments in November, to an extent that I’m now struggling to keep up with all the normal expenses I have (groceries, gas, medical bills, insurance, etc). In weeks passed, I’ve had to pawn a few of my things (old instruments, speakers, appliances) in order to scrounge together enough money to pay all the bills. I have a full-time job in IT at a local hospital but the pay is not enough. This week, I am at the end of my rope. The only thing I could pawn for any significant sum would be my father’s old guitar, which I absolutely refuse to part with. It’s one of the only sentimental…
