today I was near two coworkers talking and joking about how little they make. One goes “I make 10.50 an hour I don’t need to be doing extra work” and the other guy goes “yeah I make 8.95 top that” and chuckled. I could not believe what I was hearing. I was hired on doing the same job as him at a starting wage of 12.50. The company was recently bought out by another larger one right before i started and he’s been here much longer than me. I didn’t say anything cause I didn’t want to intrude but I’m worried about him. I don’t know him at all, I’ve had maybe one conversation with him and he doesn’t even know my name. Learn from my mistake and look up a company before applying to any jobs or accepting any job offers. I just looked up the company I used to work for out of morbid curiosity and the negative reviews mirror my experience with the company to the letter.

I’m a nurse and need bereavement leave. My company policy entitles me to three shifts. I’m asking two. They’re trying to only approve one. Just sent this email: “Hello X, I appreciate staffing concerns and I think I have demonstrated flexibility and teamwork for staffing in critical times on a consistent basis. I have never missed a day of work since my time of hire for any reason and pick up overtime regularly. Respectfully, though, I will not be coming to work on Sunday 1/29. Attached is my grandmother's obituary to show that the funeral is several states away and does not begin until 3pm on Saturday. I hope I will be granted the bereavement leave I am entitled to per policy, but either way, staffing arrangements will need to be made for Sunday 1/29 as I will be unable to attend. A cost of living increase? Nope. But instead, they paid for an organizational wide Dave Ramsey course about how to budget your money. They do not give regular raises. Cost of living or otherwise. But I will soon know to avoid avacado toast.
