I started working as an underwriter a few months ago at a bigger company and I really don’t like it. This is my second job. I had one as an insurance agent for about a year and have been doing this one for 4 months but I don’t know how long I can keep doing this. It’s incredibly boring, I sit in front of a computer all day, and they’re Nazis about being in there for 9 hours a day. My two managers suck. One is just really awkward and hypercritical. The other is just a straight up dick. Always miserable, doesn’t say hello, etc. I want to move on and do something else but I make more money here than my first job and am nervous I’ll have a hard time finding another gig. I don’t want to quit because I don’t have a lot saved. Any suggestions on…
Throwaway jic. The company I am working for as a Consultant has a very healthy work environment and culture. They're great. However, I've recently been embedded into the Client's team as a full-time engagement with a super toxic work environment. My manager on the Client side is asking me to provide various complex daily reports, forcing to turn ON cameras and just micromanaging my whole workday, expressing poor judgment on project priorities, etc. Overall, there is an atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion. I have not received proper onboarding or knowledge transfer and have been placed on high-priority projects, which will most likely be delayed. How can I get out of this situation without coming off as not flexible/accommodating to my company? Is it worth giving it a try and trying to establish some professional practices and boundaries? It's a high-profile multimillion-dollar Client, well known, so there is little leverage. Thank…
How much do you need to have kids?
I hate my job and wages are awful – I live in the east coast (super high cost of living) and my paycheck dosent make it to $1000 almost every 2 weeks. Is so demoralizing to work full time + overtime and not even make 500 per week. Every penny I make goes to survival – I can’t save nor splurge – how do you all have kids!!?? How much is the bare minimum I need to have kids? I want to be a dad but I’m thinking 19$/hr and maybe having $10,000 is the minimum I need to afford a kid… Thanks y’all
I love to shit on companies and management that deserves it, but most of us still need jobs to survive and pay the bills. Anyone interested in building a framework from the ground that operates like our ideal business model? Obviously it would need to be remote, legal, equal and flexible et al. However, members would still need to be reliable, honest, dedicated, semi-intelligent and actually want to work on the project 🤣. Interested in reading the comments if nothing more. Also feel free to DM me if you want to discuss more.
A year ago, I began working for a company that is contracted out by a big-name company. I turned down another position due to the talent acquisition boasting unlimited overtime, a pay raise after training, and performance evaluations related to compensation. After training, I received less of a raise than discussed. The group I trained with brought the question up in our group chat and everyone agreed that they were promised more than they were given. The difference wasn't much, so I didnt make a fuss about it, but thought I would approach the situation once I learned more and built some value in myself as an employee. The employees who shook the next received the proper raise. Fast forward months down the line, I have been cross trained in a few other specialty departments, and have results as a top producing individual. I reached out to HR and was…
I work in outside sales. I almost never need to go into the office and am, for all intents and purposes, a remote field worker. I have a company iPhone, a company iPad, and a company laptop. I use my personal vehicle. A few months into the job, my boss and I were recapping my performance and they were very pleased. They did state, in the normal course of review, that they can track my activities but I was always on task so that was not a concern. Another guy who started near the same time I did was let go because he never called on his customers. I know the phone is the most likely means, but I cannot turn it off. . Does my iPhone get pinged for location, or does the mobile provider (probably AT&T or verizon) somehow show my location for employers? I try to use…
Work works but what doesn’t?
I believe in the labor exchange, in that without society I would have to homestead: build a shelter, cloth my back, feed my belly. That requires work. You get those life sustaining necessities today by exchanging labor for labor tokens that you can then exchange for life sustaining elements. But what doesn’t make sense is 45 hour work weeks, strict schedules, and militant structure. How do you guys see it? Don’t we need to work to take care of ourselves? Is it work itself or how we are asked to do it that isn’t palatable?
I know a lot of people here encourage people to speak about pay with their coworkers, as keeping it secret only helps the boss. There are a few issues with this: There is no reason to think your coworkers won't resent them for making more money. Your coworkers may start asking you for money if they know you make more. They can use it against you. In general, I try to hide as much of my personal life as possible from my coworkers. Sharing information can put one in a vulnerable position.
