While at the end of my shift I realized I was being overworked for 19 dollars.

I’m a machine operator where I work, in my department there’s 5 of us. I’m always given the hardest and most troubling job because “I can handle it.” I was counting my production last night before my machine went down and realized, “why I’m working like I’m getting paid $24.” I had a mini breakdown, I went from laughing to literally crying from anger in 10 minutes. After my machine broke down and I couldn’t do anything to get it running back up so I just stopped for the night and waited for the clock to strike eleven to clock out.

I walked out of my job today.

As a woman of 37 years old who has worked in numerous male dominated fields, I mean it with every fiber of my being when I say I have NEVER experienced a work environment like the one here at HTC. I should have known that something was wrong from the moment during the interview when the owner of this “business” (Home Theatre Concepts in Morton, IL) decided it was appropriate to discuss other applicants with me, especially in regards to both their weight and appearance. Idiot me was desperate for a move out of the food industry, and I took the job against my own better judgement. In the 10 months I made it with this company, I experienced first-hand blatant and open sexism, homophobia, and racism. I heard him regularly refer to two lesbian customers as d slurs. I witnessed him refuse to work with customers because they were…

The COST of performing labor in person

I can't and won't go back to the office. A little breakdown. 1 1/2 hour commute into the city – I value my time at $30 an hour so there is $90 a day. Let's underestimate and say there's 20 work days a month so $1800 a month. Commuter Rail Pass/Subway combo – $300/month Parking at the commuter rail station – $4 a day or $80 a month Before we even get into not seeing my family and the emotional cost it COSTS ME OVER TWO GRAND A MONTH JUST TO GO SIT IN A CUBE AND MAKE SMALL TALK BETWEEN MY MENIAL SPREADSHEET TASKS. That is $27,480 a year TO WORK. ABSOLUTELY INSANE WHY DO WE ACCEPT THIS?!?!?! Hell no, I won't fucking go ANYMORE.

Get Well Soon

One of my team members had her father pass away, so I asked our HR department to arrange for flowers to be sent to the funeral. (This is something we commonly do for tragedies when they happen, nothing wild about this request.) The new HR manager gave me a lot of grief for asking for something “wasteful” like this, but in the end agreed to it, because she had to. Even provided the link for the obituary to them. They sent the flowers for the funeral… with a “Get Well Soon” card attached. I give up.

DAY 47 OF THE HARPER COLLINS UNION STRIKE!

Hi everyone! If you haven't heard/aren't familiar with the publishing industry, employees of Harper Collins, one of the big 5 publishers, are on DAY 47 of their strike with no word from managers and no contract negotiations. HC has been replacing their employees with temps and freelancers, also taking advantage of unemployed workers trying to break into a notoriously difficult industry while their employees strike for fair wages that allow them to live in NYC, where HC is based. If you can, please flood the Harper Collins social media profiles (@harpercollins on IG and Twitter) with #hcponstrike and maybe a comment about paying their workers! You can also sign the strike solidarity open letter here, and check out their linktree for more info! Thanks for your support in advance! Publishing is a notoriously underpaid industry, and most of the employees are based in NYC, which is insanely expensive to live…

Will they settle?

1/2 This is going to be a super long post so please stick around. Looking for any advice with the EEOC. For reference Crane- overhead roller crane Team manager-big boss over whole department Supervisor- shift coordinator salaried Step up- same as supervisor only hourly, basically his #2 For starters I was previously employed for over 3 years with a giant steel mill as a crane operator but I bounced around the warehouse doing all types of jobs. I made 100k/yr with great benefits tons of overtime and working swing shift, which I loved. In October we were informed that our hours were to be cut until the new year. Now not everyone was going to have their hours cut and management asked for any volunteers. I didn’t mind getting off two hours early everyday so I volunteered to work in another area not operating a crane due to crane operators…
