Here’s what I think are useful values in a workplace: Updating skills and knowledge over time. Teams having a shared sense of what we’re doing and why. Leadership that stays informed of the latest customer interests and industry trends. Discusses that with the team. A sense of goodwill and being able to be who you are at work. Knowing your job is somewhat secure or stable even in volatile times. Acknowledging uncertainty or complexity and having strategies to work through that.
Not too much to say other than with how fucked the working class are getting, how many hoops we are forced to jump through, and the amount of wealth consolidated in the hands of the rich that increases with every recession (which are engineered to happen.), we need to shut down the machine.
One of the owners of the company I work for is, lets just say, a narcissistic asshole. One of my coworkers who has been at the company for over 25 years and is in their mid seventies (well into retirement age) and has recently handed in their resignation. This employee is essentially the face of the company and is incredibly reliable and kind. However my boss has the emotional maturity level of a 5 year old and is extremely pissed. All day I've overheard my boss complaining and whinging on the phone to sales reps and suppliers we deal with about how inconsiderate this employee is for quitting and leaving them short staffed, because now they have to manage all this extra work. Mind you over half their workforce has left over the past 2 years and they have replaced no one because they can just pass on/absorb the extra…
I don’t want to get into the particulars because it’ll identify me, but there have been pretty severe cases prior to me, and frankly, I don’t know how the management team didn’t catch them. I was let go for what was originally supposed to be a suspension because I only had a verbal at that point on my record. It’s just so frustrating because I put so much of my time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears into that place, cared way more than the average employee, but when the incident happened, to them I was worth far less than the political statement firing me would have had (which, from what I heard, backfired). I was asked if I had learned my lesson, and yes, I did. Hard work means nothing to upper management, and don’t get caught next time. Half of the employees did or currently does what I did…
Sorry if I don’t word things right, this is one of my first stories on Reddit! My boss will just be Bee any coworker will be CO. Please let me know if I’m overreacting here. For background I work landscaping, we were working on a site which had an outhouse about 2 minutes away if you drove one of the vehicles provided. Just finished lunch and about 1 hour I decided I needed to use the bathroom, drove to the bathroom, used it, got back in less than around 7 minutes. Went back to working. Around a little bit later CO asks if we will take a 15 minute break (we get two per day and used only one). Bee agrees and says it’s time for a break. All other workers including I go up to leave to the break room. Suddenly, bee stops me: Bee: “You can’t go you…
I've heard some real horror stories on here. Some from the USA or from Canada and let me say that damn. I never thought I'd hear such horrifying stories from companies that should treat their employees better. That said these stories have encouraged me to seek out some more certifications and instructions. I'm still studying on Duolingo everyday and I want to take a look at some free courses online to get certified in web development or whatever they're offering. We as workers maybe be at a disadvantage for now, but I feel like this subreddit has my back. Thanks so much. I'm gonna study my ass off this year and hopefully get to somewhere better than retail. Take care and happy new year.
I work at a popular unnamed cookie place. After giving her my work availability and letting her know that I work another job she accepted my availability. Now after a week or so of working and everything going perfectly, she suddenly changed her mind about my availability saying “if you can’t work this job because it interferes with your other job, you’ll have to quit”. Is this even legal? She’s not letting me request days off that I am now forced to work. And if I don’t show up and instead go to my other job she is threatening to fire me. What do I do?
