Slow season rant

Please feel free to ignore this rant. I am a freelance attorney (I have a disability and Covid has made it really hard to find a job) who works as a paralegal quite a bit to supplement my income late November through January 1st can be a very slow time which means very little money and no paid holidays. If I don't work any particular day I don't get paid. I have friends and family who say I'm so lucky to have the downtime but all I can think about is how little money is coming in. Any fellow contractors feel that way?

For most of my work life I have experienced hostility from co-workers, managers and customers. Our society has been very fragile for decades now.

Daughter’s tips being taken

My daughter’s been working at a rolled ice cream shop for the last month. I just found out tonight that the tips are kept by the owner during fall and winter and are given back to the employees during their busier season of spring and summer, since it’s an ice cream shop. She’s in highschool and this guy has like 10 employees that run his shop. It blows my mind and pisses me off that he’s taking KID’S TIPS!!! I’m actually somewhat fuming about this, but my daughter and wife are telling me to calm down because she doesn’t want to lose her job because she loves it. I’m so conflicted, and really want to call the department of labor, but don’t want to piss my wife and daughter off. Just really confused on what to do and would appreciate any advice on the situation, I may not be seeing…

How I finally took my life back

Once upon a time, I was working for a boss who was constantly unfair and demanding. They would frequently make unreasonable requests and expect me to work long hours without any extra compensation. Despite my hard work and dedication, my boss never seemed satisfied and would often criticize my performance and belittle me in front of my colleagues. I tried to talk to them about their behavior and how it was affecting me, but they would always dismiss my concerns and continue with their oppressive management style. One day, things reached a boiling point when my boss asked me to stay late to complete an urgent project without offering to pay me overtime. I had had enough and decided that I couldn't continue working in such a toxic environment. I gathered my things and walked into my boss's office. I told them that I was quitting on the spot and…

Teacher appreciation

In the spirit of everyone talking about terrible gifts they’ve received from their employer…. My wife WAS a 2nd grade teacher. She went through the height of COVID and dealt with awful kids and even worse parents. The school district almost actively working against teachers when it came to discipline. When everything came back to in person learning (instead of virtual) and teacher’s appreciation day came around my wife went to her box where they had put the “gifts”. In the box she found a travel size pack of tissues and a single Hershey’s kiss. When she showed me, I laughed, genuinely thinking she was joking. Sadly no, that is what the school district felt like they had earned after working their asses of through COVID. I still can’t believe it.

Is it legal for an employer to deduct money from a final paycheck for unpaid tabs under the employee’s name?

I was recently fired over text due to an unrelated (but bs all the same) reason. When my final paycheck came, it was MUCH less than it should have been, so I emailed my former boss asking for a visual of hours I worked that pay period vs my pay. They sent me my hours, and said two unpaid tabs under my name were deducted from my paycheck. When I started, I was told by my boss verbally that if someone walks out without paying, we would have to cover the cost starting the second time this happened. I am unaware of what those tabs under my name were, or how much. Being under my name does not mean they were my customers, as sometimes the system stays logged in and someone else has to jump on and ring someone up. I also was never caught with a “first offense”…

My mother believes holiday work times should be opt in

What do you think ? Simply put she has states that across the board for all holidays there is likely people who don’t celebrate and wouldn’t mind to work. Wanting money or something to do. Whatever. (And that if a place can’t manage this it’s not running itself well anyway. Shouldn’t it have a big enough work force to cover, especially large stores. Little private owned stores are excluded from this as like running your own business I think they have their own rules… but I also still hate asking someone else to subsidize your dreams.) I’m thinking about this, seeing myself scheduled once again for Christmas Eve after months of established “I can’t work Saturday” it’s the day for me to see my brother in prison. And the day I make all my plans. On that note “availability” being not protected at all and something they can just choose…

how to switch from full time to part time?

im honestly really exhausted. and so fucking sick of having no time to myself. there are so many days where i want to sleep in but can't because i work at 10 tmrw. im still young. i don't need the money – i dont live alone. i can afford to make this decision. with the holidays coming to a close soon, i want to switch to part-time. halloween and thanksgiving have already been paid by me, and now christmas. after that i want to go part time. how? can anyone tell me how to go about this? i dont want to lose my job, but working ~35 hours a week is sucking the joy out of me. im tired of being so irritable and miserable all the time. i don't have the mental capacity to deal with these people, dude. i dont really know how to ask the question in…

Employer starting to rescind WFH. My role is 100% remote friendly. Absolutely ridiculous.

Days per week we're allowed to WFH got reduced by 1, with new company wide policy that we can't WFH for “personal matters such as appointments, or childcare” and said that “WFH is a privilege not a right.” These people are so tone deaf talking to us like we're children. Basically no one is even following the new policies cause they're just so ridiculous, and my manager isn't enforcing it. Why would anyone ever commute to an appointment and then commute back when they can just WFH???? Idiotic. My role comprises of 'zoom' meetings and performing work on a computer. Literally no logical reason I need to be in person to perform the duties. My team has every generation from gen z to boomers, and a handful of boomers are the only ones happy about the change. So sick of companies treating us like cattle. Some big exec just gets…
