Changing jobs advice

Need some advice on changing jobs. I’m gonna be starting a new job but the problem is the new job is only a 6-12 month term and there’s no guarantee I will be hired on full time after this, but it’s possible. Ideally, I’d like to go on an unpaid leave of absence with my current job instead of quit, so that way I’ll still have a job if I’m only at the new job for 6-12 months. Would this be possible, do you think? And how would I go about approaching by current employer with this? If I tell them “I ’m starting a new job but still keep me as an employee on unpaid leave” that might not go over too well. Any advice on what to do here? If I ask for an unpaid leave, I’m sure they’re gonna ask the reason why. Should I make up…
