Company lost it’s contract

I found out this morning when I come into work that my company has lost its contract and is letting everyone go August 31st. Supposedly they're supposed to be severance pay going along with it and they are having a meeting about how much on Monday. Something is telling me that they knew about this month ago and are just now telling us. Do you all think I should stick it out to August 31st and see if they actually do give us severance pay? Obviously I'm going to fill out applications but I don't know if I should just go ahead and find something now, or apply for the 31st. I just have this weird paranoia that they'll fire everyone before the 31st so they don't have to pay severance pay.
