Was told compassion fatigue means “your doing a job so well that you sacrifice your own well being”
No. Compassion fatigue happens because there are not enough resources at work to actually make the system better and the employees are expected to live with the consequences. That’s why people burn out, call in sick or don’t show up, and no one gives feedback because it’s only met with deflection.
And employees don’t get benefits so the trauma of work gets to come home everyday and eat into my daily life and my time spent with my family.
I like aspects of my position but I feel hopeless and the people who make decisions are on their own planet. Management and friends can’t see the big picture. Leadership is about listening and helping your staff succeed to their potential. Compassion fatigue and burnout are symptoms of a broken system and being exposed to trauma without help.
Sorry just wanted to rant.
