My coworker who has been working at the same job as me got let go today with literally zero notice. Apparently the Board eliminated her position for budgetary reasons and they gave her zero notice. My supervisor didn't even know it was being discussed until he was informed that he had to tell her. He's pissed because he wasn't involved in the decision making process.
The logic I'm told for not giving her notice was that she has access to a lot of the company's financial information and handled all of the monetary donations we receive (I work for a non-profit homeless shelter). They didn't want to give her the opportunity to say, go down to the bank and drain the accounts. No one thinks she would have done that, because she's been a model employee for nearly 8 years. As a business I understand that, but it just feels like a dick move.
What's worse is she's a single mother with an asshole ex-husband who she has to share custody of her son with (whole can of worms with him too don't get me started) and she nearly ended up in foreclosure earlier this year and she got by by the skin of her teeth. I helped her out earlier with that and I'm more than willing to help her out again, but I gotta say, I'm considering switching jobs myself at this point because of this. She's already filed for unemployment and she might have a job at as a teller at a bank she used to work at, but this whole thing just fucking sucks.
