Deadend jobs

Just another example. I have been working at a job for over ten years. In that time I have been passed on for job opportunities three to four times. First time I had recommendations from many supervisors and the supervisor position I applied for was givin to someone fresh, but had a four year education unrelated to the job. I then applied for a service position a few months later and got the position. However, this position required me to do my assembly job, and take care of service on the side. Again after 3 years of this, I was informed that the service manager was retiring and I should apply. Once again supported by many recommendations. The job was given to another person in the company that had never done service work. A little more info, none of the knowledge of these machines are well documented. Most of it is in my head. Most of the engineers have left, and the office is clueless when I am not around. The service manager job, manages and supports the dealers and warranty claims. This new guy has no clue where to start. As for me, I stopped working Fridays and Saturdays on assembly because I am sick of the assembly line. I do a good job at what I do. So I don't think they want me to move up the ladder, but thats not in MY best interest. Dead end job or being selfish?
