Discussion of wages mess

A couple days ago, my manager sent this message, “Discussing your pay with other employees is unprofessional and grounds for termination. If you would like to have a discussion about your pay, I'd be happy to discuss that with you.” to a couple of my coworkers and I. I foolishly sent a response to literally every employee that said: “Hey, (Manager Name) sent a message earlier saying that wage discussion among employees is unprofessional and grounds for termination. Although in some situations it may be unprofessional to discuss wages with coworkers, it most certainly isn’t legal to fire you over it, or even discipline you. I was spoken to by a couple managers a few minutes later about how this was kind of a terrible idea, (I agree that my method of approach was definitely rash, but I REALLY wanted to. They also pointed out that this rule on discussion of pay was in the employee handbook.
