Ex employer committing tax fraud on a W2 from 2021, now I owe 7k to the IRS

Hey everyone. Long time member, first time poster. I got a letter in the mail today from the IRS saying I owe $7,000+ in taxes because an ex employer claimed I made $49,000 more than what I really made, and it’s from 2021. Brief background of my employment, I worked there from Nov. 2020 to March 2023, when I was laid off for seemingly bullshit reasons. Kind of funny because a week before I was let go I wrote a letter to the owner stating I think I’m worth x per year, for increased workload, and time of employment over the last 2 and a half years, it got denied of course. (I had previously received a $1.00 raise in my span of employment there). Anyway. I’m reaching out to see what you all have to say about the situation and if you have any advice or recommendations on what…

I’m reaching out to see what you all have to say about the situation and if you have any advice or recommendations on what to do. I’ve already compiled bank statements with every direct deposit from that company in the entirety of 2021 to prove to the IRS I got paid what my W2 says I got paid and that the company is claiming a fraudulent number. They are now claiming (2 years later mind you), that I made an extra $49,000 that year, which in turn, the IRS thinks I didn’t claim it, and now proposing I owe them $7,000 in back taxes and interest.
