Fired while on PTO

I was just “let go” this morning. I had been on PTO for the passing of my father-in-law. I worked as a paralegal for a real estate law firm in South Carolina and took time off to drive 13.5 hours away so my wife could be with her dad the last few days he was with us. I kept my boss in the loop the entirety of my absence, helped when they reached out (while off the clock), and he had okayed everything. Your boss is not your friend, do not trust them. They will tell you to your face that your job is yours as long as you want it, and tell you their future plans for you,, only to be a chickenshit at the end and hide behind a fellow employee. Do not give them more hours than required, do not do extra work to prove your worth.
