Fired while sick

So my girlfriend was working at target for a few years and last year it was bad for her she got really sick and was having health complications (asthma, liver problems) she had doctors notes for her call outs. She got fired because she had taken some medication the night before for pain and it knocked her out and she missed the time frame to call the job and explain to them what happened. When they fired her they called her in to the job as if she had to work then just told her she could tell them what happened and they would see what they could do but they never let her say what happened and sent her home. Could she pursue a lawsuit? (Fired while sick)
