FMLA – What’s going on here?

A colleague of mine is having a baby at the end of March. She met with HR to get her FMLA paperwork started. They marked the reason for leave as “serious health condition” instead of “birth and care of a newborn.” They then told her she had to get her supervisor’s approval for any time beyond 6 weeks. I thought FMLA guaranteed 12 weeks of job protected leave. Does anyone know what might be going on here?
